Chocolate is arguably the most popular confection in the world. Total chocolate sales worldwide are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6% through 2027. Some countries, like Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland, are known for their incredible chocolate, but how much do they import or export?

Kulick’s Cookie Recipes looked at data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) to visualize the biggest importers and exporters of chocolate throughout the world. Read on to see the biggest world chocolate importers and exporters!

The Countries That Export the Most Chocolate

The top exporter of chocolate in the world is Germany. In 2020, Germany exported $4.98 billion worth of chocolate, making it one of the largest chocolate producers in the world. Some of the most popular German chocolate brands are Ritter Sport, Moser Roth, and Schogetten. Many of these brands can be found in countries around the world.

The country that comes in second for the most chocolate exports is Belgium. They exported $2.70 billion worth of chocolate in 2020. Third on the list is Italy, which exported $2.11 billion in chocolate.

The Countries That Import the Most Chocolate

The top importer of chocolate in the world is the United States. In 2020, the U.S. imported $2.9 billion worth of chocolate. The country that imports the second highest amount of chocolate is the United Kingdom at $2.31 billion. Third on the list is Germany, which imports $2.24 billion worth of chocolate.

What Country Has the Best Chocolate?

Many countries are known for having amazing chocolate, but Swiss chocolate is revered as being the best in the world. The most popular Swiss chocolate brand is Lindt (known as Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprüngli AG in Swizterland), which is sold all over the world. The company was founded in 1845 by David Sprüngli-Schwarz and Rudolf Lindt. They are known for their chocolate truffles. The main factory is based is Kilchberg, but they have additional factories in France, Austria, Italy, and the United States.

Cailler is also a popular Swiss chocolate brand. They were founded in 1819 in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, and this is the oldest chocolate brand still produced in Switzerland. The brand was purchased by Nestlé in 1929.

Another popular chocolate that originated in Switzerland is Toblerone. The company was founded in 1908 and is known for the prismatic shape of their candy bars. The company is now owned by Kraft Foods, and its products have been manufactured in several countries around the world.
